What Shows Will Never Come Back?
« on: December 23, 2004, 04:11:01 PM »
Are there any Game Shows from the 70's or 80's that you think we'll never see a new version of? I only mention those decades because I want to exclude all the crap that came after that. The 70's and 80's had REAL Game shows. So let's just focus on those. I'll start. Here are the programs I honestly don't ever see coming back in any form. The Format is just dead forever.

LIAR'S CLUB
SPLIT SECOND
FACE THE MUSIC
JUST MEN
HOT POTATO
THE CHEAP SHOW
THE $1.98 BEAUTY SHOW
PERFECT MATCH
ALL STAR BLITZ
HIT MAN

LIAR'S CLUB

With the interest in shows like "Antiques Roadshow", I think "Liar's Club" might work, perhaps instead of using celebrities, use professional antique dealers.

SPLIT SECOND
FACE THE MUSIC
JUST MEN
HOT POTATO

"Hot Potato" was a decent show in a bad time slot.  The 3 of a kind aspect was good, although I suspect a 21st century version would be 3 strippers, etc.

THE CHEAP SHOW
THE $1.98 BEAUTY SHOW
PERFECT MATCH
ALL STAR BLITZ

"All-Star Blitz" was a decent combination of HS and WOF.  ABC never really promoted 1980s daytime game shows, and I don't think they've had one since MG90.

Sorry John , I respectfully disagree with half of your selections...

Liars Club is absolutely a format that could, should work..it combines a good play along game with a venue for celebrity pimping....though man, the 80s version was deadly! ....Balderdash is a good variant on it at times....

Split Second is also a great format that could and should return....and as much as i dislike it, Face the Music would work today....

And I agree with the previous poster about "All Star Blitz", though I think i'm in the minority there!

In 1996, a couple brilliant run-throughs of Liar's Club were done, but they never got past the demo stage. This one had two teams of comedians playing for the studio audience, and Ed McMahon (!) hosted.

I thought the concept as presented was great, but I was apparently alone on that one. <shrug>

Unless Matt O. does something to tick off the man upstairs, Pass the Buck isn't coming back.

I doubt The Diamond Head Game will be coming back any time soon, either.

No you weren't alone :)

Those runthrus morphed into a pilot for FX called "Filthy Liars" hosted by Mark DiCarlo.   It didn't sell, and if my timeframe and memory are in sync, the show that sold was Bobcat's Big-Ass Show.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!

Unless they have;

1).  A 1 key start for $1,000,000!

2).  The successor; Jane Kaczmarek!

Wow.  Mo' Money Syndrome and Crappy Host Syndrome.  For host, I'd go with someone who has some experience hosting game shows--Kennedy.

You left out Crazy Format Change Syndrome--just how do you use a key to start $1,000,000?

OTOH, other shows have been revived with less (or more, depending on how you look at it).

$100 bills start spewing out the tailpipe of a 1980 Pinto, of course.

If someone won that Pinto they could christen it by hitting it from behind with a bottle of champagne. Then the money would really fly...and then they could call the show The $1,000,000 Cash Explosion.

Let me add to this list...Concentration.
The game is far too drab.  It is incapable of holding the attention span of today's audiences.  Now; maybe if you put two playboy bunnies in as hosts; and they took away two articles of clothing each time you made a match, you might have something; although you may have a hard time concentrating.

I simply don't agree. I think it's engaging, and it has metric buttloads of play-along factor. As long as there are sheep willing to drink the Kool-Aid at the altar of Sajak, I say there is room for Concentration, if it's done right.
